Automation in the upstream sector

The principal role of the SCADA system in the upstream sector is remote data transmission, the Scada system helps prevents blowouts, veries the safety of pumping, and watches out for the integrity of the wellbore. It reads the measured ow and level data and sends the set points to the plc. The plc then compares the measured ow to the set points and adjusts the parameters as required. Once the product is crude oil or natural gas out of the ground it must move down the river to the midstream sector. This sector of the industry handles the transportation and storage of crude oil and natural gas. There are many ways to transport this product including trucks, ships, trains, and pipelines.

Automation in the midstream sector

Oil field companies are strict with their pipeline processes the need for accurate and up-to-the-minute control and monitoring is critical to ensure that their products ow safely and thus these midstream companies automate pipeline and transportation processes. The plc control system in the oil and gas pipeline is used to monitor the parameters such as temperature, pressure, and flow by the means of all kinds of automatic monitoring instruments and control equipment. The oil and gas are transferred to a storage facility before they can continue down to the refineries.

Once they arrived at the refineries, we are oficially at the downstream sector. Here, the crude oil and gas are refined and processed into finished products. The storage tanks are equipped with overfill prevention systems that prevent a spill. A floating sensor rises with the level of liquid in the tank and triggers an automatic shut-off valve when the desired level is reached. The excess oil flows into a gravel line concrete trap where it then gets flushed into a special tank called the gravity settler. In the downstream processes, the SCADA systems supervise PLCs and IPCs which are focal points for a plant’s inputs and outputs. It also provides the human-machine interface to provide the current and previous state of the plant to the operator under one roof.
